After-Sun Soothing Spray
Lisa Murray, RDN, LD
Summer is a time for fun in the sun! Whether you spend your day golfing, hiking in the mountains or at the beach or the pool your skin gets a real workout too.
Despite our attempts at protection, sun, wind, sea salt and chlorine can dehydrate summer skin, so rehydration, antioxidant support and sealing in moisture are an important part of repairing damage from exposure.
There are three natural ingredients very well-known and studied for their efficacy in healing and repair of burned or damaged skin:
- Aloe vera
- Vitamin E
- Lavender oil.
While science has yet to understand all the constituents and mechanisms behind their healing properties, it is currently known that their high antioxidant activity helps reduce inflammation and aid in the repair and regeneration of the skin cells — also one of the secrets in maintaining more youthful skin!
I keep aloe vera gel, vitamin E oil and lavender oil around at all times for helping to heal burns, itchy rashes and skin scrapes, and I put them all together in a fabulous “after sun” greaseless rehydrating skin spray!
A very effective skin soother, the antioxidant activity of the ingredients also helps prevent oxidative damage. You can apply this under sunscreen, and after a shower before you apply other lotions or oils, but ESPECIALLY anytime your skin needs a little extra TLC!
